A PRotégé’s Approach

A young professional’s take on the up-and-coming.

@SocialMediaPDX Event A Hit!

Monday night’s Social Media Club event in Portland was a great turnout. Being the first inaugural meeting in Portland, Social Media Club PDX (@socialmediaPDX) reeled in at least 100 people. The video above is a quick pan of the room in The Agency sports lounge prior to Chris Heuer’s (@ChrisHeuer) talk. This was the first social media event I’ve attended, and it truly put the “social” in social media.

Being the Flip Cam enthusiast that I am, I took a couple videos, but the blaring white projected screen made it hard to watch for the whole seven minutes of introductory footage I shot. I still recommend checking out the YouTube video and listening to the audio while doing…anything else. Carri Bugbee (@CarriBugbee) lead the event and introduced Heuer, who spoke on how to make your company a more social organization.

It was pretty cool to meet Bugbee, who won a Shorty Award for her Twitter portrayal of Peggy Olson (@PeggyOlson) of AMC’s “Mad Men” (congrats!). Heuer’s information was invaluable. I especially enjoyed his thoughts on companies ushering in new ways to interact with constituents via social networking, like employees using Twitter accounts for both customer service and personal messaging. Audience members brought up several interesting points as well, including the transparency of recommendations people provide on Twitter; Are they contributing to the conversation or getting a kickback from giving a referral?

I was privileged to put some faces with names, which furthered my efforts to try and assist some Portland professionals with bringing a particular SM event to the City of Roses (perhaps more on that later). I advise all young people interested in social media to seek out as many face-to-face opportunities with other SM enthusiasts and professionals. You may get something worthwhile out of it in the near future.
